Day 5
Monday
21/01/18
The fifth session began with our faculty asking us whether we have completed all the tasks that were to be done by us for assessment along with the blogs. Only 5 of us had all the work completed and even our blogs from the 4th session were missing some information. So technically speaking not even a single student had all the work up to the mark. Our faculty had asked us to ponder upon what measures can be taken to help those lagging behind in the tasks, to help bring them on track. To which I answered that we could keep a check on them from time to time before the deadline, we can keep encouraging them to complete the work but even despite that if they fail to do it, they should be punished in one form or the other. However, to this he counter questioned me that what if even that doesn't solve the problem, what is yo be done in that case, to which I didn't have an answer. He further said that won't pointing out their mistakes and making them realise how their inefficiency is hindering the entire group or the system be more helpful than punishing them. I agree to it because until and unless the self realisation is achieved, no change can be brought, not in the long run at least.
Then coming to the blog entries that we've been doing for every session, he tried to explain to us that they are incomplete which led to the discussion of the terms objective and subjective. He asked us what objective means according to our understanding. I tried answering but withdrew because I was still trying to gather the words I needed in order to explain those. Some one else answered that objective means the brief or the aim. However, that wasn't the context we had to talk about. Our faculty then in order to explain those terms to us picked up a bottle from the table and asked us what it was, to which all of us replied a bottle. Now that would be an objective, which won't change from person to person under any circumstanceci He then asked us what was inside it and what was it's temperature. And the answer to these questions varied from person to person as that is subject to change according to different perspectives. And that is what would be called subjective, as it can differ when viewed from different aspects.
After this we came to talking about art and science. Our faculty asked us why did we choose the particular subject film appreciation for, the scientific aspect or for the sake of art, to which most of us answered art. Then he asked us what do we mean by art. To that I replied it's a way of expression but that still lacked something. He then asked us how is it that we reach to expression. To which as answers various terms like originality, creativity and inspiration emerged. After some more discussion we reached to the conclusion that expression can be achieved after the following in the below given order
Observation➡️Experience ➡️Ingestion➡️Analysis➡️Opinion/Perception➡️Critique
All of these is what leads to the creation of any art. No art can be born out of something that one hasn't experienced.
From this discussion we came to the blogs we are supposed to write. In our blogs we are supposed to include three things
1. What happened?
2. What did I learn?
3. What was different?
This is related to the discussion we had about art as what happened refers 5o the experience we have in class, what was learnt refers to our analysis of it and what's different is supposed to be our critique about all of it.
What I learnt or gained from this class is the concept behind creating art, the difference between what's objective and subjective but most importantly for the first time I could understan what really has to go in writing these blogs.
Also, we've been asked us to ensure that all those coming to the class have their tasks up to date or else it won't be possible to move forward with the subject topics with the majority lagging behind and that it's the collective responsibility of the entire class to help each other out. Because no system can work efficiently if not everyone's on the same page.
Though this class was not what I must have thought initially a film appreciation class would be like but it still was an important one because how can I understand films, which are a form of art if I don't even know what the word art implies. And how can I go on understanding the making of films when way more people are involved there than we have in our class and I can't even get them to cooperate.
We haven't really been taking the discussions that have been happening in the class about anything but films seriously. We often come to a class with the thought of learning about just certain topics. Apart from that all seems irrelevant but if we really want to learn, we can't limit ourselves to certain things because there's much more important things to be learnt outside the limit we set for ourselves. Every interaction teaches us something or the other.
